Knowing which club desteve is a member of I can say the local Solo fleet whilst a great bunch of guys (and not as old as the normal Solo sailors) are definitely not up there with the top guys (with a couple of exceptions). So it is not surpising that a well sailed Topper will beat it.

The difference between a Solo handicap (1155) and a Topper (1290), if they are still that this year, is rather greater than 30 points or so. The Solo does seem to do pretty well on handicap in many conditions, provided the sailor is good enough. Having owned both, I would bet on a Solo against a Topper on handicap with similar standard helms until the point where survival comes in. I might loose the bet occasionally, but not often. Edit - inland, that is - can't speak for relative performance on the sea. Edited by Rupert |

Thats just because they're not being sailed properly. The difference in standard between the solo fleets at club/local open level to that of the fleet at the nationals is huge. Almost everyone in the top 30 at the nationals is a bloody good sailor with most of the top 15 having finnished in the top 10 at a worlds or euro's in other classes.

solo's seam to heal like crazy in gusts but not surge forward like a laser or a topper where every wind change changes the boat speed in about a second

As only a tiny handful of people in the world sail C Class catamarans the logical deduction is that speed is unimportant for just about *everyone*. |

I guess the Solo PY is representative as they are a very numerious class and must have had lots of returns done over the years. Just shows for some speed is unimportant. |

I don't know... we've beat Solo's and Toppers on the water in the Mirror on a
good day. Can't get past the top Solo guys on handicap at the moment though. ![]() |

I'm very suprised by that Steve, i have sailed at a club where Solos have been one of the dominent classes for a long time. I can't think of a time when a topper has done even the worse Solo sailor, so well done.
