those pictures look suspiciously like jacquelines that sail off hill head.

errm changed my mind, nothing like it, jacquelines have a jib to start with. but they are both 12 foot

only thing I can find back on Vrijbuiter is that is was a centerboard boat allowed to carry maximum 15mē of sail and  that it has nearly vanished as a class today

only few boats have been built after World War 2

I guess it lost out against 16Mē class which started in 1931 and has become a very big class in Holland

Thanks Nondutch.

Now, can tell me anything about a Dutch dinghy class or boat called the Vrijbuiter which was about 22' long and sailed in the '50s???

It was used for the 1920 Olympics (only two boats raced, both owned by the same man and the racing moved from Holland to Belgium or something halfway through the regatta, making for the most international of Olympics  :-)  ) and in the 1928 Games where they got a good fleet.

Still about 400 sailing in Holland, where only wooden planked boats are racing. A resurgence in Italy, which allows 'glass boats and has I think something like 150. Also a class in Japan.

If anyone tells you that (a) the Snipe, I 14 or Star were the first international one designs, point them to the 12 (b) that one designs die out, point out to them that the first 2 one design dinghies (from 1884 IIRC) and the first interntional OD (1912-ish) are all still sailing.

I think the bigger boats are Rainbows (Regenboogen) or 30 square metres (not the ex Int 30 square but a local class).

I'm sure Chris Turner could sue you for defamation if you confuse us.

(in my defence I've been trying to finish a bloody book on dinghy history and design for a while....currently wading through the *&^%$ Moth chapter.....foilers have made it a lot harder).
