I have "hose pipe" style handles towards the back of my Contender. I don't use them and I doubt I ever will. The thought of getting my foot trapped in it in a capsize scares me. I'm taking them of when I fit the new progrip. If you have progrip I doubt that you would need the anyway?

DONT take them off just yet Ross.  They are very good and helpful for trapezing on a broad reach in marginal conditions.  You need your weight back, but without them there is no way to brace yourself apart from friction.  Even if you can brace on friction alone, your feet will hurt like hell after a short time

I have a set of Magic Marine ones on the back of the 16; used them a few times and they keep you there when the front of the boat disappears in to a wave.  Just make sure they are not too tight.  Don't want to be stuck in them if the boat does go in....

I say fit them at a slight angle as mine are upright and wish they weren't! It's not often that you are in the footloops stood vertical!

i always fit mine verticaly as then when you get low on the trapeze your foot rolls back and locks you in, i don't know how easy it would be to get your foot out in an emergency but its fine for normal manouvers as i tend to stand up on the gunwale holding the trap handle to free the clip.

also if they were mounted horizontaly then if you capsized it would be harder to get your foot out, i'd have thought?
