Pro-am cup 2000 - final day

by Event Press on 16 Oct 2000
Bertrand Pace today won his last competition in France before he joins Team New Zealand to prepare the next America's Cup defense. Olympic medallist Jochen Schumann took 2nd with Franck Cammas 3rd in both the overall and professional rankings.

Today started with a choppy sea and a 15 knot South-West wind. French skipper Bertrand Pace took race 6 from Jochen Schumann, who made the best start but chose the wrong side of the course during the 1st downwind leg. Schumann eventually finished in 4th place. Laurent Sembron's Nantes-St-Nazaire-Bouygues-Telecom finished 2nd with Franck Cammas 3rd and John Cutler 5th.

In race 7, the Swiss team of Ville-de-Genève, skipped by Etienne David, scored their 2nd victory against the pros in rough conditions. Nantes-St-Nazaire-Bouygues-Telecom finished 2nd for the 2nd time today, which was not bad too. The four pros: Pace, Schumann, Chieffi and Stead took places 3 to 6. Ville-de-Genève's performance confirmed the interest of the "pro-am" formula...

In race 8, Etienne David's amateur crew went on to win, thereby being the only boat to take three victories ahead of pro Bertrand Pace, the only one with two victories. Nantes-St-Nazaire-Bouygues-Telecom gained an exellent 2nd place for the 3rd time today.

This year's event sailed in Mumm 30s has seen the highest standard of amateur crew since the K-Yachting Pro-Am Cup began.
