The Race Team Adventure congratulates Innovation Explorer

by Keith Taylor on 9 Mar 2001
The crewmembers of Team Adventure today
sent their congratulations to their sister-ship Innovation Explorer that
crossed the finishing line yesterday in Marseille, placing second in The
Race of the Millennium

'We heard that Innovation Explorer crossed the finish line just before
noon,' said co-navigator Larry Rosenfeld. 'They sailed very well to keep
chasing the Blue Boat. They essentially kept the margin that developed at
the end of the South Atlantic all the rest of the way around the globe.
Congratulations Team IE - very well done! We're sorry we couldn't keep it a
three-way race at the front and make it more interesting for you and Club
Med.'

Rosenfeld, the co-founder and partner with skipper Cam Lewis in the Team
Adventure Education Foundation, reported from their 110-foot catamaran, over
5,000 miles from the finish line and 750 miles southeast of Rio de Janeiro.
Team Adventure was forced to stop in Cape Town, South Africa, and
Wellington, New Zealand, after rough seas damaged its main crossbeam.

The boat was on course for the finish line, sailing at 16 to 18 knots in a
15-knot northeasterly breeze, Rosenfeld said. Air and water temperatures
were getting warmer and crewmembers were taking the opportunity of 'the
first drying-out day in quite a long time' to dry and air bedding and
clothing.

Rosenfeld paid a special tribute to skipper Cam Lewis, who celebrated his
43rd birthday yesterday.

'I thought I might say a few words about how great it has been to work with
Cam so closely over the past few years,' Rosenfeld wrote. 'It has been a lot
of fun and hard work with tremendous support from family and friends (old
and new).
'My experience is that project of this magnitude is only worth all the
effort if you enjoy the ride and Cam has a unique gift for making the ride
fun and attracting great people along for the journey.

'For those of you who know Cam, you know what I mean and even for those who
don't, the letters we get on board show that his spirit comes through in his
communications that have touched so many people.

'We have had a great time together turning this dream into reality and then
sailing the real deal together with a fantastic and dedicated crew and
bringing the world in on the adventure. My hat's off to you, partner, for
all you have done to make this project happen. Thanks for sharing your dream
with me.

'We still have a few miles to cover, but as we return up the Atlantic and
close our course, we are beginning to focus on the future. In upcoming
reports we will talk more about our vision for the future of the Team
Adventure Education Foundation and what we hope to accomplish.'
