Hogs Breath Race Week
by Tom Coull on 23 Feb 2001
This years 12th Annual Hogs Breath Race Week - to be held between August 10th & 16th
2001 - is shaping up as one of the largest yachting regattas ever held in the tropical
North Queensland resort town of Airlie Beach.
The event has grown steadily since it's inception eleven years ago - the brainchild of Hogs Breath
Cafe founder, Boss Hog Don Algie - who dreamed of an annual event that allowed skippers and
crew of National and International racing and cruising boats an opportunity to experience the
unique sailing and lifestyle conditions of the Whitsundays - one of the World's premium blue
water sailing regions.
Now incorporating the annual National Championships for the sleek Bashford Sydney 38's, Hogs
Breath Race Week is fast becoming one of the premium off-shore sailing events on the
International racing calender.
Hogs Breath Cafe's Intergalactic Marketing Guy, Miles Wood, says this years event will eclipse
the success of past Hogs Breath Race Weeks. ' We already have confirmation of eleven entries -
six months out from the start of the event. Vaughn Stibbard, owner/skipper of ThE Business has
re-affirmed his entry to defend his 2000 National Title and we expect a full field of beautiful
Sydney 38's and if last years Championship is anything to go on, this years championship
should produce some of the closest Sydney 38 racing seen in Australia'.
'Hogs Breath Race Week also provides crews with a great opportunity to get some race
preparation under their belts and blow off some cobwebs in preparation for Hamilton Island Race
Week, which is run in the proceeding week', Miles added.
One of the highlights of the unique Hog's Breath Race Week is the off-course fun and action
provided by race organisers. Along with providing some of the closest racing in Australia, Hogs
Breath Race Week has a hectic social calender - skippers, crew and support crew all enjoying
the tropical lifestyle that is the Whitsundays, all hosted by Australia's leading theme restaurant
company.
'Along with our other scheduled social events the traditional Hogs Breath Race Week beach
party returns this year - bigger and better than before - this year we will be holding the party next
to the brand new $8 million Airlie Beach Lagoon facility which is conveniently located directly in
front of our Airlie Beach store - it just can't get any better than that!' Miles said.
'When you combine the fantastic racing, the excellent and inexpensive facilities of Abel Point
Marina, the amazing range of accommodation available in airlie Beach - from five star to
backpacker hostels - and the joys of sailing around one of the World's best sailing regions along
with maybe picking up one our most sought after crystal trophies - there really is no excuse not
to head North and be a part of Hogs Breath Race Week 2001' he added.
Accommodation for skippers and crew can be easily accessed by booking through Airlie
Beach.com Travel Centre who, having handled the accommodation requirements for Hogs Breath
Race Week for many years, understand the accommodation needs of Race Week participants.
