Australian Team confident for Youth Worlds
With the first day of racing for the 2000 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF
World Championship scheduled for tomorrow, Australia’s Youth
Team are feeling confident for a good start to the regatta.

All team members took part in today’s practice race on Sydney Harbour, with some
good results.

In the 420 class the West Australian girls, Melissa Bryant and Martha Leonard had a
slow start, but their exceptional boat speed brought them up through the fleet.

'The girls are sailing well,' said 420 coach Paul Eldrid. 'Their boat speed is great, and
they have the brains to finish in the top five. They were on the wrong end of the start line
today and rounded the first mark in 14th place. However, they came back up to fourth
place, and when a couple of the other boats pulled out, they crossed the finish line in
first place.'

Eldrid was equally happy with the Australian boys’ performance. They also had a poor
start, but worked their way up the fleet to finish in the top five.

In the Laser class very few of the fleet actually finished the race. Australia’s Ben Austin
was also a victim of the slow starts today; however, his boat speed is also good, and he
managed to mow his way back through the fleet.

Similarly, in the Byte class the practice race was a non-event with only four boats
finishing today’s race.

It was a mixed day today for Australia’s Mistral representatives. Allison Shreeve was
happy with her placing in the top three, whilst Cameron Harrison had a frustrating start
which was a sign of things to come for the entire race. However, he was reasonably
happy with his sixth placing overall.

Tonight sees the Opening Ceremony for the event take place at the International College
of Hotel and Tourism Management in Manly. The College, which is acting as the Village
for all competitors and support staff is proving a great home for the 250 entrants from 37
nations.

Racing will commence at midday tomorrow and two races are scheduled. Light to
moderate northeast to southeast winds are forecast.

Only one race will be held on Sunday, with new year’s day (Monday) a scheduled rest
day. The event is scheduled to conclude on Friday 5 January.
