New Sydney 38’s now up to boat 31!
by Martin Thompson on 6 Dec 2000
The rapidly growing Sydney 38 One-Design Class had a very successful
Sydney debut in the 2000 Ord Minnett Short Ocean Racing championship
over the last week-end days off Sydney Heads.
Sydney 38 boat number 23 will be delivered in December, less than 10
months after the first boat hit the water.
Boat number 31 is listed for March 2001 delivery so it is clear that the
Sydney 38’s are making a real impact.
The Sydney 38 One Design Class rules require owner/amateur drivers and
have been carefully designed to limit costs to that of club level
racing. As well as taking the Australian market, with four fleets
already being established, they are selling strongly into North
America, with a fleet in Chicago and another starting on the West Coast.
Current interest in Europe is expected to result in the class becoming
established there within the near future.
The real strength of the Sydney 38 is its versatility for racing,
cruising and entertaining.
It is a very fast yacht for its size and it has the race results to
prove it, with excellent IRC results at Australia’s Premier Race week.
As well as being a fast, exciting and very easy to sail One Design and
IRC class boat, the Sydney 38 is proving very popular for coastal, club
and twilight sailing. With an appealing interior, it also lends itself
to corporate entertaining and weekend cruising.
The ISO accredited Sydney Yachts production facility is placing emphasis
on having the Sydney 38’s ready to sail, race and win when owners take
delivery.
Having delivered boat number 22 last Wednesday, Sydney Yachts watched it
perform in the 2000 Ord Minnett Short Ocean Racing Championship, only a
few days later, with pride.
In her first ever race, number 22, now called “ Next, People Telecom”,
with borrowed sails was a creditable third behind the Australian Sydney
38 One Design Champion and Runner-up. In her third race “Next, People
Telecom” got the gun.
Matt Winkie, the skipper had been very pleased with his first ever
regatta with his new pride and joy.
He said “It is a credit to the quality of the Sydney Yachts that we
could take delivery of a brand new Sydney 38 One Design boat on
Wednesday and be race ready on Saturday and win on Sunday!”
