DAY 4-- QUARTERFINALISTS DETERMINED AT ROLEX 2000 ISAF
by Media Pro Press Release on 1 Dec 2000
Defending champion Dorte Jensen advances with ease
St. Petersburg, Fla. (November 29, 2000) - After a long and light day on
the water, the world's top 16 skippers have been narrowed down to the top
eight contenders for the quarterfinal round of the Rolex 2000 ISAF Women's
World Match Racing Championship. Reigning champion Dorte Jensen (DEN)
easily progressed along with Paula Lewin (BER), Hannah Swett (USA) and
Katie Spithill, the 18-year-old match racing sensation from Australia.
In the other group, Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson and Marie
Bjorling (SWE) both won six of their seven matches to advance. They are
joined by Klaartje Zuiderbaan (NED) and Betsy Alison -- the second- and
third-seeded skippers -- respectively.
In the very last race of the day in the dying light over Tampa Bay their
match proved to be one of the most exciting and significant. Alison looked
to have gotten the better of the Dutch boat on the final run, raced in
Sonars, but Zuiderbaan started jibing at her rival.
Alison responded aggressively and luffed Zuiderbaan hard, but the move
backfired on her as Zuiderbaan stole her wind. Running down to the finish,
both skippers looked across to see who wold steal the win and it went to
Zuiderbaan by a one-second margin. Alison a five-time Rolex Yachtswoman of
the Year didn't look happy, but by the time she reached the dock at St.
Petersburg Yacht Club, she was philosophical. 'We made some mistakes, but
we're happy,' she said. 'That two seconds that lost us the last race
dropped us from winning the group to coming fourth, but at least we're
through to the next round and that's all that matters.'
The disappointment of joining the consolation round is softened this
evening with a private tasting of reserve wine, hosted by Dry Creek
Vineyard.
Tomorrow's schedule features the quarterfinal round, which will determine
who advances to the semifinal round. The top four finishing skippers will
find themselves with a ticket to that round.
