Hayman Island starts today

by Ian Grant on 12 Aug 2000
A near perfect Whitsunday forecast of moderate 15-18knot South East winds has provided ideal match racing conditions for the opening races of the Joico Big Boat Series 2000 off Hayman Island today.

The forecast will blend perfectly as the top American skipper James Richardson makes his claim to become the first International to win the prestigious seven-race championship.

Richardson winner of the World Farr 40 One Design championship has chartered an Australian sloop for the tactical 'dogfight' against some equally talented 40ft class crews.

The Richardson skippered Barking Mad has been named as the series favourite but the top Australian crews on the Sydney 40's Sword Of Orion (Rob Kothe) and Hog's Breath Clipper Cup champion Ocean Designs (Stephen Bean) may have the slight edge with previous local course experience.

Wayne Millar's Townsville sloop Zoe , South Australia's Ausmaid (Kevan Pearce) and Warren John's Heaven Can Wait which have a good race record in moderate to fresh breezes will make it tough for the lone American skipper Richardson to steer Barking Mad into a series lead in the 12 n/ml races off Hayman Island today
