Scottish Topper Travellers at Dalgety Bay Sailing Club

by Bill Young 22 May 2006 20:39 BST 20-21 May 2006

The first Scottish Topper Traveller of the year attracted a healthy field of 35 sailors between the two fleets. Dalgety Bay SC made the fleet most welcome over the two days of competition and the wind gods provided a variety of strengths to give everyone a chance to show their best.

Ben Wilcox, Most Improved Topper Sailor in 2005 showed why he won the title by lodging an early victory. Konrad Weaver, moving up from Optimists, proved his selection to the GBR Topper Squad in the next race, and young Lorenzo Chiavarini, took advantage of the lightening winds in the third race to grab a well earned win.

The forecast light winds for Sunday did not appear, instead we were blessed with a good F3/F4 and a not insignificant swell from the Forth and a steadily improving day. The girls must have decided that the boys had had their day on Saturday, with Lynn Crichton winning the first (4th) race and Amy Buchan her club mate taking second. In Race two of Sunday (5th) Konrad had to fight hard against the returning Rona Young and pipped her on the line.

Ben Wilcox finished as he started with victory in race 6, but consistency proved to be the key to victory, and Konrad was a clear winner overall.

In the Development Fleet we welcomed a number of new faces and by all accounts they had a great time. Johnny Patterson, Largo Bay SC was the winner with Rory Kilgore, Cove SC second and Angus Stephens third.
