WYA PGL Regatta 2002 at PGL Royal Oak Llangorse

by Richard Twining 2 Sep 2002 12:59 BST

Over one hundred young people arrived at Llangorse Lake this weekend (31 August - 1 September) for the Welsh Yachting Association/PGL annual Welsh Inland Youth Championships. Competitors are attracted from all parts of Wales and neighbouring parts of England.

Children as young as 5 or 6 and as old as 17, compete in the event. Sailing is a sport in which boys and girls compete equally and in recent years more and more girls are not only taking part, but picking-off the trophies

Says Mal Jones, PGL's watersports manager and Director of the event, "This is a highly popular sailing event where boys and girls come to compete, to learn, and above-all to have great fun racing in sailing dinghies."

"Yachting was Great Britain's most successful sport at the last Olympic Games - with men and women both taking medals. Combined with Ellen MacArthur's triumphs in ocean yachting, sailing is on a crest of a wave of popularity with young people."

Mal Jones added "Llangorse Lake, and PGL's Royal Oak children's watersports activity-holiday site, has hosted this popular event for many years and we are delighted that we have launched the competitive sailing careers of many young people."

Gareth Davies, from the Sports Council for Wales, says: "We are determined to increase female participation in sport and I am pleased to see that the number of girls in sailing is growing. I hope that many more younger girls will see what can be achieved and will also take to the water!"
