505 & Fireball Open Meeting at Hayling Island Sailing Club

by Gerald New 24 Jun 2002 11:06 BST

Hayling Island SC hosted Open Meetings for the 505 and Fireball classes over the weekend of the 22/23 June and managed home club winners for both.

After the first days racing for the nineteen entries in the 505 Open, Ian Pinnell and Steve Hunt were tied for first place with Simon Payne and Bill Masterman. On Sunday, in lighter winds, they quickly took the first two races and then headed in to leave the fleet to sort out the places in the final race. Payne and Masterman took that race ahead of Stuart Turnbull and Jason Lunn to confirm their second place overall ahead of Terry Scutcher and Christian Diebtish from Shotley SC.

In the Fireball races Chips Howarth and Vyv Townend won the first days races from twenty three entries, but then struggled on Sunday with Vince Horey and Jon Mildred from King George SC winning race three to move into the lead. In race four they both gave pace to Andy Pearce and Adam Broughton, Portishead SC, who added a win to their second in the first race of the day.

Howarth and Townend got it all back together to win the final race and the series, holding off Horey and Mildred by one point, with Dave Wade and Richard Wagstaff sailing a steady series to take third.
