RS400 Open Meeting at Aldeburgh Yacht Club

by Matt Fairless 11 Jun 2002 09:05 BST

Ten local boats were joined by eleven visitors to Aldeburgh in Suffolk for the open meeting held over the weekend of 8th/9th June, with three races held on the sea each day. Rupert Kenyon & Toby Lewis from Hamble River SC made the most of Saturday's glorious F3-4 conditions to win all three races, but came off the water to find they had been over the start line for the final race. This left them the clear overnight favourites but needing three good finishes on the second day.

After an excellent dinner in the clubhouse on the Saturday night the fleet arrived to find conditions F4-5 and forecast to increase. Several boats chose not to launch but with the courses set close to the shore, those on the beach were treated to excellent spectating including one point in the first race when almost all of the boats were capsized, and all were on hand to help the returning boats to land safely as the wind touched F7. Locals Stephen & John Fulford revelled in the conditions, notching up three wins to take the event by one point over Kenyon & Lewis, with Martin Browne & Dinah Holmes from Great Yarmouth & Gorleston sailing very consistently in all conditions for third overall.
