Captains Lottery Race at Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club

by Mike Woodhead 15 Apr 2002 16:29 BST

The RYYC 2002 season got under way with glorious sunshine and an easterly force 2, enabling race officer Alan Sergeant, to set a large triangle around club buoys. A mixed fleet of catamarans and monohulls got away from a true line at the first attempt. On an ebbing tide the left side of the long first beat was highly favoured. Good boat speed and tactics saw Matt Exon in his Hurricane 5.9 draw out a long lead on the water. The Dart 18s of Geof Preece, Syd Gage and Andrew Frankish were always in close company - this lasted to the finish where 10 seconds covered the three. The Finn of Mike Woodhead made good progress and held off the Dart 15 (Graham Parris) on the water, this proved sufficient to win the event on handicap from Matt Exon the leader on the water.
