Icebreaker Series finale at Ballyholme Yacht Club on Sunday

by Elaine Taylor 19 Dec 2001 14:37 GMT

The final race of the Ballyholme Yacht Club's Icebreaker Series takes place on Sunday and it is hoped for another good turnout of both monohulls and catamarans. With forty boats on the water in recent weeks the racing has been close with all conditions prevailing. Racing amongst the catamaran fleet is close with the Elaine and David Taylor in their Hurricane 5.9 leading by 2 points from Stephen Polly and Diedre Coffey in a Dart 18. The Lasers are not quite so close with Gareth Flannigan flaunting a four-point lead over Chris Boyd with youth sailor Matt McGovern in third.

With the leading boats away skiing at the weekend (or will they be grass skiing?) places may change in the final results.

Last Sunday Michael Ennis and Gavin Doig’s Laser Two won the race by almost two minutes from Russel McGovern in his Laser. Gareth Flannigan added another consistent result to his series in third place with Matt McGovern fourth. Bill O’Hara was doing well until the wind dropped a little allowing the lightweights past him but he still held onto fifth place with Chris Boyd sixth.

The multihulls enjoyed the trapezing weather with the Taylors having a convincing win over Stephen Polly and Jan Nixey. Adrian Allen kept ahead of the remaining cats to finish third with Doug and Jo Rennie fourth. Peter Kernohan lost concentration (the first time in many months) and missed the course change, thus sailing around every mark in the Bay just to keep himself right!

After sailing on Sunday the Icebreaker sailors turned out in force for the Icebreaker Dinner. With 65 sailors, rescue and guests enjoying Christmas Fayre and a spot of dancing, it was a night to remember!
