Dart 18 Open Meeting at Snettisham Beach Sailing Club

by David Bartlett 17 Jul 2001 23:14 BST

14/15th July

The club's annual open meeting attracted 25 boats from five sailing clubs. Conditions were a challenging force 1-2 on Saturday on a Wash neap tide and storm clouds always threatening. Bob Fletcher & Ian Clayton showed their current seasons form by winning the first race. The single round 2nd race was decided at the start when Stuart Snell/Ali Fletcher & David/Lisa Bartlett went for a late pin end position and an immediate tack along the shore to take a clear lead. Snell took the 3rd race after some deft downwind jibing against an ebbing tide in a dying breeze to lead overnight.

The club entertained 75 guests in the evening with authentic Caribbean food and original DJ music so fortunately the Wash tides allowed a lazy start at midday on a sunny Sunday. Jasper/Laura Barnham took both races with a characteristic display of boat speed in shifting light winds. They and Joffan/Stupots Garka from Worthing were fortunately only 100 metres from the final windward mark when a sudden 30-degree wind shift turned the fortunes of most of the rest of the fleet in the final race.

Only one point separated winner Snell from Barnham in the final tally and maintained the club record of home wins at this popular open meeting.
