Wayfarer Open Meeting at Blackwater Sailing Club

by Paul Trueman 9 Jul 2001 19:33 BST

7 & 8 July

The format of two races per day down river from a committee boat start attracted eleven club boats and four visitors.

Race one sailed in a light NW 2 - 3 was led from start to finish by Mark Jarred and Nick Collins making the most of the last of the flood, with Mike Pearce and Bryan Southgate second. Dave Ryder and Mike Brett led at the windward mark of the second race, however by the leeward mark Mark had overtaken them and went on to a second win with Anthony Sinclair and Nick Bennet second.

By Sunday the wind had increased to a fluky Westerly 3 - 4 which had RO Andy Pickering and team working hard to give competitors an unbiased line. In race three Mark had his poorest start of the meeting but was back up to 4th by the windward mark. He continued to work his way through the fleet winning from Dave in second place.

Race four saw the most action at the start with Dave over and having to return putting 2nd place overall beyond him. Mike led at the windward mark with Mark in third place. By the second beat Mark was leading once more and went on to a fourth successive win with John Parker and Alex Tibbenham in second place.
