East Lothian were the hosts for the event for all Scottish champions and Traveller Series champions, the MUSTO Champion of Champions, also sponsored by Bosuns Locker and RYA Scotland. Held on the 21st and 22nd of October, North Berwick’s famous microclimate defied the gloomy weather forecasts to provide sunshine and good winds on the Sunday. Four races on the Sunday followed one very light weather race on the Saturday.
40 boats came to the line for the first and only race on Saturday, which was shortened after just one triangle. Sarah and Emily Robertson took that race in their RS200. Sunday provided very different conditions, with medium winds allowing the faster boats to stretch their legs. A variety of course shapes including windward leeward, box and W shapes gave all types of boat the chance to impress. The event finished with two W courses, providing spectacular sights as the boats zig zagged downwind on reaches which challenged some of the more powerful boats.
But two of these powerful boats nonetheless came out on top, even if they had to keep their kites down on some of the reaches. Overall winner was Ian Renilson sailing a Musto Skiff, the second successive year that class has won. Second was Ross McKerchar and Stuart Gardner in their RS800, while in third Robbie Burns and Vikki Simpson were the only slow boat in the top six. Best junior was Emma Wilkie in her Topper.
