Kieler Woche 2006 - Day 4

by Hermann Hell 20 Jun 2006 23:02 BST 17-25 June 2006

Finally good breeze for all International Classes

Last but not least Kiel Week offered a good SW breeze Beaufort 3 – 4 to all competitors of the 16 International boat classes. The Race Committee on the 8 courses tried hard to start as many races as possible per course, thus catching up on the rather “slow days” out on the Baltic over the last weekend. However, the intention of letting the top ten after about 10 qualifying races sail a final on the last day, was dismissed by the Race Committee, as no International Class sailed more than 6 races during the last 3 days.

The 29er fleet enjoyed the fresh breeze and sailed 4 more races in Schilksee Bay, Benjamin Friedhoff/J. Munding, GER defeated successfully their lead and won their first “Kieler Woche” trophy; 2. Nathalie Keller/Moritz von Werdt, SUI – 3. N. Hollenbeck/M. Kreutzmann, GER.

The 420 Class sailed in 3 groups and really needed today’s better wind conditions to determine the 3 best scoring crews: 1. S. Baur/K. Berggren, GER 2. C. Bossard/M. Lurneau, FRA, 3. K. Mueller/S. Boschert, GER.. The Race Committee withdrew it’s yesterday’s decision, - the Kiel Week overall results will count as qualification for the Class World Championship.

On course Golf the Laser Radial M and the Piraten choose their Kiel Week winners: Laser Radial M: 1. D. Baldewein, GER, 2. M. Roessner, GER, 3. Tim Voigt, GER, Pirat: 1. T. Heldt/L. Wetzke, GER, 2. A. Schneider/K. Mundhenke, GER, 3. Seekamp/Schuette, GER.

The Folkboats and J24s sailed on the Southern coast of the Kiel Fjord and enjoyed 2 fair and windy races: Folkboat: 1. C. Nielsen/Dehn Brothers, GER (who won the Kiel Week title for the first time against the dominant Danish teams of this keelboat class), 2. Henriksen/Nielsen/Mathiesen, DEN 3. M. Moeller/Hertig/Csuvari, DEN. J 24: 1. Karsunke, GER, 2. G. Wilcox, GER, 3. K. Walkusch, SWE.

The Formula 18s and Hobie 16s enjoyed speed and fun on the outer race course area, finally they had their adequate wind speed: Hobie 16: 1. M. Huang, P.Q. Chung, SIN, 2. D. Mohr/J. Wegener, GER, 3. J. Goritz/S. Monreal, GER. Formula 18: 1. The brothers C. and H. Sach, GER (who changed from Tornado to the more exciting Formula 18 Class for good) 2. A. John/S. Hahn, GER, 3. A. Bredendiek/N. Fröhmer, GER. Beneteau 25: 1. K. Mares, GER, 2. D. Tillmanns, GER, 3. J. Hellmich, GER, 4. M. Christensen, DEN …… and each of their 4 crew members.

Likewise the FDs and 505 competitors liked the fresh breeze and sailed 2 more races: Flying Dutchman: 1. Brothers J. Bojsen-Moller (this is their 12th win of the Kiel Week title!), 2. S. Majthenyl/D. Andras, HUN, 3. J. Witte/S. Maedicke, GER. 505: 1. J. Saugmann/M. Ramsbaek, DEN, 2. B. Herrmann/J. Kleiner, GER, 3. S. Koechlin/A. Priegann, GER.

The Dragons and H-Boats even had a rough ride with some strong current on course Delta, when rounding a mark several „beautiful“ Dragons caused heavy damages to their hulls, but 2 races could be finished today. Dragon: Many Dragon crews dream of winning the traditional “Felka-Trophy” once in their life! – Kiel Week 2006 the German team Uli Libor/S. Hellriegel/T. Flach achieved this “goal” being the winner of the final “Match Race” between the 1st placed crews within the first 3 races. Winner of the Kiel Week fleet races: 1. T. Mueller/V. Hoesch/M. Scheibmeier, GER, 2. A. and P. Kadelbach/F. Butzmann, GER, 3. J. Bendix/J. Groenbech/L. Christensen, DEN. H-Boat: 1. H. Peulen/P.Vrancken. Snellens, DEN, 2. M. Nielsen/Borch/Kloster, DEN, 3.
