ABN AMRO ONE interior revealed

Sanderson gives rare insight into life below deck on ABN AMRO ONE

In an unprecedented gesture of goodwill, Mike Sanderson treated the public of Rio de Janeiro to an exclusive insight into life at sea by revealing the never seen before, and highly secretive, interior of ABN AMRO ONE - the leading boat in the Volvo Ocean Race.

There were gasps from some onlookers as they gazed at the sumptuous interior and lavish fittings and fixtures of the new breed of Volvo 70’s. The tour of the interior, which is often shrouded in secrecy, revealed a whole host of luxury appliances including plasma screen TV’s, designer kitchen complete with wine chiller and ‘state of the art’ sound system.

This unique insight into life below deck was provided by Mike to give the people of Rio a better idea of life at sea during the race. Speaking from the Marina de Gloria, Rio, Mike said, “It’s important for the crew to relax after a tough day and so we all sit down to a crew meal at 8 o’clock. Crusty usually cracks open a Chateau Margot ’49 and Jan Dekker is quite partial to a Monte Cristo cigar before turning in. The only problem is the odd squabble over the remote control and what to watch on TV. Personally I’m happy just listening to Rob Greenhalgh’s recital of Mozart’s Clarinet concerto in C minor and Irish seems happy just packing the dishwasher and pottering around. Then we all retire to our cabins before another hard day back on deck.”

Mark “Crusty” Christensen said, “Life at sea can be hard. Today I was on kitchen duty and those oysters can be damn tricky to open. Add to that the stress of getting Sidney’s steak the right side of medium rare and you soon get an idea of the strains we’re under.”
