Zhik 29er National Championship at the WPNSA - Day 3

by Paul Hammett 16 Aug 2017 12:37 BST 12-17 August 2017

Day 3 of the Zhik 29er UK Nationals saw 4 races sailed in 11-15 knots in Weymouth Bay and was a day when a few pairings put a marker down for the Championships.

Safety Lead Michael Black commented that the day’s racing was sailed in champagne conditions. In the Gold Fleet Nick Robins and Billy Ozanne led the way with a 1,1,2,4 to leap frog to the front of the standings with the Norwegian pairing of Mathias Berthet and Alex Franks-Penty tied on 31 points with Max Clapp and Ross Banham. No doubt Mathias and Max could compare notes of their experiences at the Optimist Worlds where Mathias finished 2nd in 2016 compared to Max’s 13th in 2012.

The changed winds have shuffled the pack after the lighter winds of qualifying and 4 more races are planned Wednesday in a similar forecast breeze 11-18 knots. With the first discard coming in after 5 races expect further changes to the standings. Hannah Bristow and Emily Covell lead the Ladies in 4th with Charlotte Ormerod and Daniel Lewis leading the Mixed Category in 12th. Henry Chandler and Louis Johnson are leading Juniors.

In Silver fleet some close racing is also taking place with Luke and Ewan Gribbin tied with Iain Bird and Anna Rowe on 60 points. Emma Tardrew crewed by Rex Farrant is poised a point behind followed by brother George Tardrew crewed by Henry White.

As the wind has increased and the Finals series becomes more important the fleet has reduced its penchant for UFD/OCS/BFD and Race Officer Stuart Childerley and team have rattled through the racing with a total of 24 races in 3 days so far and another 14 races to go. The forecast suggests there is a very good chance of a full series with the Black tie dinner on the last night after an interesting Karoake on Tuesday night.
