Dart 18 Open at Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club

by Alan Kernick 15 Aug 2005 11:39 BST 13-14 August 2005

24 boats arrived at beautiful Bridlington Beach for the 6th Dart 18 Travellers Trophy. Saturday saw perfect Dart18 conditions with a moderate sea state and wind constantly above force 4 but at times gusting 6.

Race 1 started with Andy & Claire Round being a bit keen and ending up OCS but the rest of the fleet got away cleanly. Alan & Fiona Kernick (Red Insurance) pulled out a substantial lead up the first beat which they kept to the finish with Paul Wakelin and new crew Emma Curtis on Fluid Boat Services holding onto second in front of Jamie Lynch & Jamie Ferguson. Charlie Hillier & brother Ben were 4th.

Race 2 and the entire fleet got away first time. Jamie and Jamie pushed the Kernick’s hard for the first lap until an unfortunate capsize put them out of the race which allowed the Kernick’s their second win of the day. Paul and Emma again came in second with Geoff & Jenny Lloyd coming in a well deserved third. Andy & Claire were 4th.

Race 3 and the Kernick’s led to the windward mark closely chased by Jamie/Jamie & Paul/Emma only to give their lead away to both boats on the first downwind leg. After some close racing Jamie and Jamie got their first bullet ahead of 2nd placed Paul/Emma followed by the Kernick’s and Round’s.

Sunday dawned with wind gusting up to Force 7 and the race officer wisely called it a day without any racing leaving the overnight results to count.

Thanks from the Dart 18 fleet to all at Royal Yorkshire Yacht club for hosting a great event.
