A stronger breeze than forecast from the south west, coupled with an outgoing tide, resulted in a solid beat to Blackstone for all starters.
The mirror sailed by Martin and Tom Ley scored another first place victory over George Alexander's Topper in the Junior Handicap. In the fast handicap, Graham Cranford Smith won the start and lead comfortably to Saltstone until the close reach to Gerston saw Alistair Morley close the gap, screaming through in his Phantom. The close reaches were far too close for those boats with spinnakers! The National 12 of Chris and Rosie Winzar made the best of the conditions and were able to take the win at the end of the race, with Morley finishing second.
The Solo fleet were divided into two clusters by the end of the beat to Blackstone and remained separated for the rest of the race. Stuart Cartwright demonstrated his diving skills once again by losing his rudder and capsizing on the run through the Bag on the way to mark 7. Andy Savell, Ollie Alexander, Adrian Griffin and Jonty White battled it out at the back of the fleet, meanwhile at the front, a four man battle ensued. A strong start by Billy Jago was challenged by Tom Morris, Ed Stephens and Simon Yates, with Tom Morris managing to pull away into the lead on the reach to Gerston. Fresh from his recent vacation, Simon Yates fought his way to the front through the bag, but it was Billy who regained the lead on the shifty beat, covering Yates to secure the win.
David Jayne and Chris Spencer Chapman took first place in Yawl 28, with Jon and Clare Lewis finishing second.
