Swarkestone Sailing Club Juniors Sponsored Sail

by Charlotte Hadden 8 Jul 2005 12:01 BST 25-26 June 2005

Junior members of Swarkestone Sailing Club in Derbyshire organised and took part in a sponsored sail to raise money for Sailability in our area. Early on Saturday morning, 20 juniors, including several beginners, began sailing laps around the lake, with adult members providing safety cover (and food support!).

Each lap was one mile long, and our aim was to sail as far as possible. The wind was around force 3 on both days and the weather was perfect for the sailors aged 6 - 16 years. Throughout the whole weekend, the number of laps were tallied, and by late Sunday afternoon, we were very proud to find that a total of 169 miles had been sailed, which is an amazing achievement by everyone involved.

The money raised will be used to buy several harnesses, repair one of the special disabled boats and put some money towards a new hoist.
