Reporting on a Cadet entered in a handicap championship against other classes is quite rare. However, Alex Colquitt of West Kirby S C competed in just such an event when representing the 4th Heswall Sea Scout Group at this year’s Scout National Sailing Regatta.
Held at South Shields S C over the weekend of 10th/11th September 2011, Alex, with his crew Stuart Went competed in the Under 13 Slow Fleet against Herons, double-handed Laser Picos, RS Fevas and a Topper. Blustery conditions prevailed throughout the weekend, making it challenging for the 102 teams entered in U13, U15, U18 and Leaders/Helpers categories. Gusts of 40 kts were recorded and rounding the gybe mark proved difficult for many.
Of the four races sailed by the U13’s, three were abandoned with Alex & Stuart leading each of the double-hander slow handicap classes. Fortunately, they also won the only race to be completed and came away champions in their category.
