International 14 World Championships after 4 races

by David Keast 29 Jun 2000 08:35 BST

Race 3 The race should have been on Monday but the day’s racing was abandoned because of lack of wind.

Wednesday was much more promising. Just as well as two races were hoped for.

An 11 am the start was planned for Race 3. The race started soon after with one recall. Subsequently the black flag was used - again.

It was a pleasant easterly breeze making for twin wiring on all legs. The worry was that this wouldn’t be sustained for the two races.

At the first windward mark Chris Turner & Peter Bagwell just had the edge on Andy Fitzgerald and Tim Hancock..

At this stage Colin Goodman & James Storey were not in the top ten. Chris Bundy & Jamie Hanseler were fifth but by the end of the third beat the Americans were in the lead and Colin Goodman was third and Zeb had moved up to seventh.

By the final leg (not a beat on this course) Chris Bundy’s lead had grown to over two hundred yards from Chris Turner. Then there was quite a gap before Colin Goodman & James Storey.

Race 4

This race was sailed back to back with No3 and a start was made just after 2pm.

The black flag again Roddy Bridge, Andy FitzGerald and Zach Berkowitz made their way home.

As feared the wind had eased by the start and continue to fade during the race. At the gybe mark there was hardly a zephyr.

Colin Goodman & James Storey had a good start and were first at the windward mark ahead of Ian Teasedale & Simon Heusen. The worry was that the race would be abandoned after hours of sweat and points lost for those who had earned them.

There was a result – a win for Colin Goodman & James Storey which, when the discard is applied leaves them in the lead – just.
