Competitions galore at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show

by Emma Slater, RYA 17 Feb 2011 14:50 GMT 5-6 March 2011

Make your way down to the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show this year and you could be in with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes for yourself or your club.

By simply buying a ticket in advance and nominating your club you could help your club win one of three fabulous prizes depending upon the number of tickets sold and nominations made.

  • 10 -20 tickets sold – your club could win – a set of 10 Rooster Sailing buoyancy aids courtesy of Rooster Sailing
  • 21 – 30 tickets sold - your club could win– a set of Volvo race marks courtesy of Volvo
  • 31 or more tickets sold – your club could win – a safety Boat Package comprising: Suzuki 9.9hp Outboard engine, Rigiflex New Matic 360 motor boat and trailer from Mersea Trailers; thanks to Suzuki, Rigiflex and Mersea Trailers

Don’t worry if you’re not a member of a club, there are still loads of other opportunities to win prizes.

To celebrate the 60th birthday of the show we have a fantastic competition where you could win a brand new Laser Pico, a Sunsail holiday for a family of four to Club Vounaki or a ‘money can’t buy’ sailing trip on the C-Class Wing Sail Catamaran Invictus, which will be on display at the show. All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is simply identify how many Laser Picos are on display at the show, enter the prize draw and you could be a winnner.

Another great prize up for grabs is a two day learn to foil course for two people at Mar Menor in Spain, courtesy of Pro Vela. Simply go along to the Foiling Fundamentals talk which takes place on the Volvo Main Stage at midday and enter the free prize draw.

There is also a chance to win a day’s training with Alan Williams, author of the RYA’s latest publication, the RYA Optimist Coach Handbook at Plas Menai in North Wales. Alan will be officially launching the new book at the show at 10.30 on Saturday in the Coaching Area in the Panorama Hall. All you need to do is buy a copy of the book through the RYA Shop and a winner will be selected at random after the closing date (31 March).

For our younger visitors there is the great Diamond Treasure Hunt. Track down the clues and collect the diamonds from around the show and you could win yourself some fantastic prizes from sailing kit and books or even one of the several mystery prizes (prize giving at 16.15 Saturday and Sunday on the Volvo Main Stage).

It doesn’t stop there either. Many of the show’s exhibitors are running some fantastic competitions where you can win amazing prizes too. Just some of the competitions taking place include:

  • Cherub Class (West Corridor and stand D16) – you could win an Allen 3230 GTI hoist block developed for the 49er Olympic campaigns and donated by Allen. All you need to do is enter their ‘Get your Heart Baking’ competition by submitting a homemade cake to the Cherub stand by 1pm on Saturday 5 March. Skandia Team GBR’s Penny Clark and members of the Cherub class will then pick the winning baker and the winner will be announced at 14.30 in the West Corridor.
  • France Leisure Holidays (stand A10) – as well as a small gift for the first twelve visitors to the stand, by entering the free prize draw you could win a one week holiday to Western France including Ferry crossing. Winners will be announced after the show.
  • Boating on a Budget (Yachts & Yachting stand C74) - visit the stand and buy a raffle ticket to be in with a chance to win “Cute” a newly restored Cadet dinghy as part of the boating on a budget project. All money raised will be donated to Burnham on Crouch RNLI. Winners will be announced on Sunday 6 March at 15.00 on the stand.
  • Tall Ships Trust (stand C84) – Win a sailing voyage worth £500 with the Tall Ships Trust free prize draw. Winners announced after the show.

The RYA Volvo Dinghy Show, in association with Yachts & Yachting and Suzuki, takes place at Alexandra Palace, London, 5-6 March.
