RS800 Nationals at Exe Sailing Club - Day 2

by RS Class Association 18 Sep 2010 14:56 BST 16-19 September 2010

Day 2 of the RS800 Nationals was sailed in similar conditions to day 1. After a couple of general recalls the race officer brought out the black flag and the race got away at the 3rd time of asking. Mcgrane/Allen quickly made their way to the front of the fleet and pulled out a comfortable lead which they held to the finish. The battle continued up the second beat for the rest of the fleet with those who kept their heads out of the boat and on the correct shift pulling out well. Tim Saxton/Nicola Groves managed this better than most and held 2nd for the remainder of the race, with Nick Charles/Chris Martin rounding out the top 3.

Race 2 started in slightly less breeze, however the big shifts were still there. Stevie Wilson/Adam Broughton managed to get the first beat right and lead at the windward mark, with the bulk of the pack very close behind. Mcgrane/Allen managed to take the lead up the 2nd beat , however the fleet was the closest it had been all week. By the end of the race Mcgrane/Allen and Wilson/Broughton took the top 2 places after a very close fight up the 3rd beat with Charlie Roome/Dave Steed finishing in 3rd.

Race 3 started in a nice left hand shift and those who were able to tack onto port quickly made the big gains. Wilson/Broughton kept away from the fight at the pin end and got away cleanly to lead comfortably at the windward mark followed by James Date/Toby Wincer. Wilson/Broughton kept in in the groove and sailed off into the distance winning the race comfortably. The usual battle continued in the fleet with the large shifts making for some big gains and losses. Chris Webber/Jim Baldwin pulled through to 2nd, with a decent lead from Tim Saxton/Nicola Groves continuing their good day in 3rd.
