Burnham Week 2010 - Preview

by Mel Lewis 2 Jul 2010 09:01 BST 28 August - 4 September 2009

Preparations for the 2010 Burnham Week – a week of great racing and exceptional socialising - are reaching a climax. Running from August 28th to September 4th, this year it incorporates the Mini-tonners East Coast Championship, the Hunter 707s Nationals and the Sonatas Eastern Region Championship too.

There will be the dinghy weekend over the first weekend, and the standard class racing from Multihulls, Class 1 to Class 5 and separate classes for day boats including Hunter 707s, Dragons, Squibs, RS Elites, Brightlingsea ODs RCODs, RBODs, Sandhoppers Ospreys, Phantoms and more. A separate start can be arranged for any class numbering six and over who would like to do the week as a visiting group.

To help it all run smoothly, a new website has been commissioned and this is now on line with Notice of Race and Sailing Instruction details. Visit the new website and meet the faces behind the scenes that have been busy getting the week together over the past nine months. There is information on past Burnham Weeks and it will be up-dated with news as it comes in.

Burnham Week 10 will offer the same incredibly flexible racing system which has been offered in recent years. Contestants can enter from one race to twelve (depending on the class of boat). Burnham Week offers different racing each day – with the River Roach at one end of Burnham and a bend in the river at the other, courses are interesting and varied.

Larger boats operate further out of the mouth of the Crouch but also have a turn up river. Special marks are laid for the week to add a different dimension for those used to racing in these waters. Racing is under the control of the Race Committee which has many years of racing experience to call on, and Class Captains can have their input.

Classes are sent up river on two days to vary the racing and allow spectators the spectacle of the boats racing with the bulk of the racing starting in the region of ‘Pile House’ which has been the starting line for many Burnham weeks of the past.

With the four Burnham waterfront clubs working together to produce the week, there is entertainment all week to suit all tastes. For any further information on Burnham week, please contact Paula Stanbury on 07801 712776.
