RS200s at the Filey Sailing Club Regatta

by James Whitehead 8 Jun 2010 16:42 BST 5-6 June 2010

A fleet of RS200s took part at the Craftinsure Filey Regatta over the weekend of June 5th and 6th. Sailing on the windward/ Leeward course the 200’s managed to sail 5 races in mixed weather from very light winds with sunny skies to strong winds and rain!

Saturday Race 1 was sailed in a force 2 to 3 and was lead from the start by James and Mandy Whitehead (Filey) closely followed by Richard Whiteley and Dan Phillips (Ripon) These positions were held despite a sudden wind change on the last leg to the finish.

Race 2 was held in light winds this time Richard and Dan took line honours with Jeremy and Charlotte Collins (Beaver) 2nd and Phil Benn and Ewan Byers in 3rd. By this time the wind had disappeared and racing was abandoned for the day. Typically as the boats were packed away the Filey sea breeze kicked in.

Sunday morning and it was damp and windless, the boats launched and by the time the first race started there was a light breeze. Race 3 was lead from the start by Ali and Chris Fry (Royal King George) the win looked in the bag when they miscounted their laps and started another lap to let three boats through and ending up 4th. Phil and Ewan took advantage of the mistake to take 1st place.

After 3 races there were 3 different winners. The wind had now increased to force 4 which James and Mandy found more suitable and took 1st place in race 4.

The overall standing was now between Richard/Dan and the Whitehead’s, with the Ripon duo just needing to stop James and Mandy winning. The race didn’t start well for Richard and Dan as they tried to block Whitehead on the line but ended up coming off worst and getting stuck behind the committee boat. Whitehead rounded the windward mark in third behind the Collins and the Fry’s but by the leeward mark had pulled through to first which they held to the finish. Richard and Dan had made a charge back to 2nd place in the final race but it was not enough.

Thanks to Filey SC and Craftinsure for a fantastic event.

Overall Results:

1st James and Mandy Whitehead (Filey SC) 6pts
2nd Richard Whiteley and Dan Phillips (Ripon SC) 7pts
3rd Jeremy Collins and Charlotte Collins (Beaver SC) 12pts
4th Phil Benn and Ewan Byers 13pts
