Team Brotherton-Asquith lead at French Olympic Sailing Week

by Paul Brotherton & Mark Asquith 29 Apr 2010 10:20 BST 25-30 April 2010

Continued light winds meant we were stuck on shore for another day on Tuesday, but thankfully we finally got some good racing in yesterday and Mark and I are leading the 49er fleet with two days of the regatta left to run.

After two races on Wednesday, six hours of baking in the sun followed by two more races as the sun was setting, we were pretty fried by the time we got back to the boat park – it was a late finish and a long day, but we had a great day on the whole, managing to pick up a race win, a fourth and a second.

Race four didn’t go so well – we crossed the startline early, so we had to go back and were playing catch up from that point on. We finished that race 25th, but thanks to an otherwise solid series so far, we’re able to discard that score and are counting all results inside the top four at the moment.

There are still two more days, including Friday’s double points-scoring medal race to go, so the hard work is by no means over for us yet. There’s talent all over the place in the 49er fleet, whether it’s within our own Skandia Team GBR teammates or internationally, so we’ve got to stay focussed. However, if you worry too much about the level of competition we’d be all over the place so for us it’s just a matter of concentrating on where to put our boat at any one time.

It would be nice if we could have a bit more wind so that we could practice some of the stuff we’ve been working on in the UK, so if the breeze got up a notch or two that would be fantastic so we could have a bit of a practice in everything. But we’re ready for whatever comes our way.

Thanks to all for your good wishes and support - fingers crossed for the final push!
