A wonderful day with a 12-14 knot north westerly breeze marked the conclusion of the first Volvo Cup D-One event. After 4 races the victory goes to Andrea Giammarino, second the Spaniard Michele Agustin Zabalua and third place for Michele Tognozzi. Next Friday the Melges 32 fleet will be racing at La Marina di Scarlino.
Weather conditions enhanced the performance of the D-One, the dinghy designed by Luca Devoti during the first event of the Volvo Cup 2010 circuit. The race, organized by the Yacht Club and Marina di Scarlino in collaboration with Mediavip and Devoti Sailing, saw 16 sailors from four nations face off on the water.
Luca Devoti, designer of the D-One, stated: “This is fantastic sailing in a fantastic venue. This is why we have chosen La Marina di Scarlino for the D-One National Championship in 2011”.
“The D-One combines fun and good technical skills. It was a great race. This is one of the best race courses that are in Italy” said the winner Andrea Giammarino.
The first race of the day, third in the series, was held with 7 knot breeze from 050° and victory went to Andrea Magni, the creator of the Volvo Cup circuit. Second Spaniard Agustin Zabalua and third Marco Valentini. By the time the second race of the day got under way, Maremma’s classical thermal breeze had kicked in. The 13 knots from the northwest truly enhanced performance of the D-One ensuring a fun-filled day for all competitors. The fourth race overall had particular format designed by Luca Devoti: double scoring and not included discardable results. The race was therefore going to determine the winner of the event.
Italian Andrea Giammarino (LNI Porto San Giorgio) dominated the fleet from start to finish, beating Zabalua on the finish line. On the podium Giammarino was first, Agustin Zabalua second and Michele Tognozzi third. The Award giving ceremony was held in La Piazzetta la Marina di Scarlino with the Islands of Elba and Montecristo serving as a breathtaking backdrop.
Great sailing returns to La Marina di Scarlino next weekend, with the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series: 18 teams, including Vincenzo Onorato’s Mascalzone Latino, will face off on the Gulf of Follonica.
