420 Nationals at Pwllheli Sailing Club – Overall

by Jan Lasko 24 Aug 2008 11:51 BST 18-22 August 2008

Friday brought beautiful sailing conditions for the final three races of the 420 British Open Championships being held at Pwllheli. Blue skies and a northerly 13-15knots greeted the sailors. Today looked like providing a fitting climax to a highly successful week. Phil Sparks/Ben Gratton went into the final day with a four point lead on Ben Saxton/Claire Lasko. With three races the other top ten positions were likely to change, and the ladies championship was still far from over.

Race 11

For Saxton/Lasko, the day got off to an excellent start: finishing first with Sparks/Gratton in fifth meaning that points were now level with two races to go. Ben Palmer/Piers Strong continued to mount their challenge finishing in second ahead of Peter Irwin/David Kohler. Rebecca Kalderon/Rosie Sibthorp continued to extend their lead in the ladies standings finishing in 8th.

Race 12

Race 12 saw the joint leaders pull away from the fleet with Saxton/Lasko to get the better of the encounter to take first ahead of Sparks/Gratton. The ladies seem to have read the conditions well, with Kalderon/Sibrthorp in third, Joanna Freeman/Konrad Weaver in fourth and Hermione Stanley/Hannah Mitchell in fourth.

Race 13

With only one point between the leaders, Saxton/Lasko had to beat Sparks/Gratton to be sure of winning or ensure that Sparks/Gratton finished worse than 3rd. In the pre-start Saxton/Lasko initially had Sparks/Gratton pinned out, but keeping their nerve, Sparks/Gratton sailed away to use their speed to start away from Saxton/Lasko. After the start, Sparks/Gratton found a wind band during part of the first beat which enabled them to get in front and they kept their lead to the finish and with it won the National Championship with Saxton/Lasko second on countback. Sarah and Catherine Alton took third in the race ahead of James and Will Rusden who finished fourth overall. Recovering from a few earlier setbacks, Tim Kinver/Charlie Makepeace finished in fifth.
