Olympic Sailing Regatta day nine news

by Mark Jardine 17 Aug 2008 07:10 BST 9-21 August 2008

All times BST, refresh for latest news

10:31 - 49er - Overall Results (subject to protest by the measurement committee)

Gold - Denmark - Jonas Warrer & Martin Kirketerp Ibsen
Silver - Spain - Iker Martinez & Xabi Fernandez
Bronze - Germany - Jan-Peter & Hannes Peckolt

The British team have finished 9th.

10:29 - 49er - Overall Results

The Danes have won gold! Spain silver and Germany bronze. Wow!

10:25 - 49er - Medal Race Finish

I've got so many unanswered questions in my head; can the Danes legally borrow a boat? did they get through the start line in time? I haven't looked into the sailing instructions!

10:20 - 49er - Medal Race Finish

We'll give you the confirmed results as soon as we have them... The Brazilians have finished under jib alone!

10:18 - 49er - Medal Race Finish

Jonas Warrer & Martin Kirketerp Ibsen have finished 7th in the borrowed boat. I think this is gold for Denmark is the most dramatic fashion. This would give gold to Denmark, silver to Spain and bronze to Germany.

10:17 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Danes are upright! They now just need to tack, bear away and finish 7th for gold!

10:16 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Danes have capsized! They're only yards from the finish!

10:12 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Danes are still out on the course in the Croatian boat. I think they can still win gold if they finish 7th! They're on the final run!

10:10 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Italians finish 4th. This puts Iker Martinez & Xabi Fernandez ahead on points. The French finish 5th, Australia 6th.

10:08 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Australians are upside down again! Can the Sibello brothers get to the finish?

10:07 - 49er - Medal Race Update

Germany finish second, Britain third.

10:05 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Brits have gone through a huge pitch pole! The Spanish team have dropped their spinnaker and are trying to sail to the finish. It's survival they're going for. They've won the race! This could give the Spanish gold!

10:04 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Italians are upright again and are trying to hoist their kite - they've done it ok.

10:03 - 49er - Medal Race Update

I don't believe it! The Australians have now capsized! What's going to happen next?

10:02 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Sibello brothers have capsized! If Nathan Outteridge & Ben Austin hold it together they've got gold!

10:00 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Australians Nathan Outteridge & Ben Austin lead round the windward mark, the Italian Sibello brothers round second. This would give Italy gold and Australia silver.

9:58 - 49er - Medal Race Update

This is all action - Qingdao finally delivers!

9:55 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The leaders have rounded the leeward mark - one lap to go. Austria lead, Italy second, Australia third. There seems to be a problem on the Australian boat. If the Italian Sibello brother stay in second then they'll win gold.

9:54 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Brits rounds the windward mark followed by the Brazilians who capsize to windwards!

9:52 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The French team round fifth, Germany sixth - two minutes behind the leaders.

9:49 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The rain is coming in - the visibility has dropped. The Austrian team of Nico Delle-Karth & Nikolaus Reschis lead around the second windward mark, Italy second, USA third, Australia fourth.

9:47 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Danes (sailing the Croatian boat) rounded the windward mark in 8th - this would give them silver - anything could happen in this race!

9:44 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Austrian team have rounded the leeward mark first, the Italians, Pietro & Gianfranco Sibello, are second. The Brits have just pitch poled!

9:43 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The race leaders Emmanuel Dyen & Yann Rocherieux have capsized! So have the Germans!

9:41 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The French sailors Emmanuel Dyen & Yann Rocherieux round the windward mark first. Austria 2nd, Italy 3rd, Great Britain 4th, Germany 5th, Australia 6th, Brazil 7th, Spain 8th.

9:39 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Danes have borrowed the Croatian's boat and have started the race!

9:37 - 49er - Medal Race Update

It looks like French sailors Emmanuel Dyen & Yann Rocherieux are leading the race. With the Danish team out, Pietro & Gianfranco Sibello are leaders overall with Australians Nathan Outteridge & Ben Austin just 3 points behind going into the medal race.

9:36 - 49er - Medal Race Update

The Spanish team of Iker Martinez & Xabi Fernandez have capsized again!

9:35 - 49er - Medal Race Start

The race starts!

9:34 - 49er - Medal Race Start

One minute to go!

9:32 - 49er - Medal Race Start

The Danish broken mast is confirmed - awful news for Jonas & Martin as they can only watch the race from ashore. The Spanish team of Iker Martinez & Xabi Fernandez have capsized as well.

9:29 - 49er - Medal Race Start

Shock news from the race course, it sounds like leaders Jonas Warrer & Martin Kirketerp Ibsen from Denmark might have broken their mast as the racing goes into the 5 minute sequence!

9:28 - 49er - Medal Race Start

This should be starting soon. While Stevie Morrison & Ben Rhodes can't win a medal, they can try to finish their 2008 Olympic campaign on a high.

9:26 - Finn - Overall Results

Gold - Great Britain - Ben Ainslie
Silver - USA - Zach Railey
Bronze - France - Guillaume Florent

9:24 - Ben Ainslie Update

Ben Ainslie is now officialy Britain's greatest ever Olympic sailor. Silver in Atlanta, Gold in Sydney, Gold in Athens, Gold in Qingdao. Simply awesome.

9:18 - Finn - Medal Race Finish

It's gold for Ben Ainslie!

9:15 - Finn - Medal Race Update

Guillaume Florent rounds third, Rafa Trujillo fourth. Zach Railey is in 6th.

9:14 - Finn - Medal Race Update

He's tacked back onto the starboard layline. He's rounded the windward mark... first! He runs off in a sheet of spray. Jonas Hoegh-Christensen rounds 17 seconds behind.

9:13 - Finn - Medal Race Update

Ben tacks onto port towards the windward mark.

9:12 - Finn - Medal Race Update

The waves are huge! Ben is working the boat brilliantly upwind. The BBC coverage just showed a graphic of the fleet upwind - I couldn't work out who was where - very confusing.

9:08 - Finn - Medal Race Update

16 knots of breeze as the Finns power upwind. Live coverage is on BBC Interactive with commentary from Richard Simmonds and Shirley Robertson.

9:06 - Finn - Medal Race Update

Ben rounds the leeward mark first. He hadn't extended as I thought, Guillaume Florent was just behind him with Jonas Hoegh-Christensen very close. Zach Railey is still back in the pack.

9:04 - Finn - Medal Race Update

Ben is surfing the waves beautifully. He's extending his lead all the time.

9:03 - Finn - Medal Race Update

Denmark's Jonas Hoegh-Christensen rounds next followed by Canada's Christopher Cook. Zach Railey is in the following pack.

9:01 - Finn - Medal Race Update

Ben Ainslie has rounded the top mark first! French sailor Guillaume Florent tacks behind him.

8:57 - Finn - Medal Race Update

They're heading towards the windward mark - it's windy out in Fushan Bay but the rain has cleared. Ben has a good lead over Zach - I can't tell where they are compared to the rest of the fleet. It looks like Ben may have overstood the windward mark on the starboard layline.

8:55 - Finn - Medal Race Update

I go and do something for a minute and they get the racing underway! Ben Ainslie is ahead of Zach Railey.

7:46 - Laser - Race 7 Start

It's back under postponement for the Lasers.

7:40 - Laser - Race 7 Start

It looks like they're trying to get this race underway on Course C.

7:32 - RS:X Women - Race 7 Finish

Bryony Shaw finished the race in 5th. This puts her in 6th overall - 9 points off 3rd.

7:30 - Finn - Medal Race

It looks like they're heading into the harbour. Is this due to the visibility?

7:25 - Finn - Medal Race Start

I think they may be moving the course area - they're all sailing off on port tack. I haven't seen the yellow and black L flag on the committee but it's hard to see anything in these monsoon conditions!

7:22 - Finn - Medal Race Start

The postponement flag is back down after they moved the pin end committee start boat.

6:42 - Laser Radial - Race 6 Finish

17th for Penny Clark in race 6.

7:22 - Finn - Medal Race Start

The postponement flag is back up - not sure why. The conditions are hidious but they can't have postponed for rain!

7:21 - Finn - Medal Race Start

The postponement flag is down and the 5 minute gun has gone - game on! Ben Ainslie has a 12 point lead over American Zach Railey. It's monsoon conditions in Fushan Bay.

7:08 - Finn - Medal Race Start

The Finn medal race is still under postponement. The wind is up and down like a yo-yo.

7:07 - RS:X Women - Race 7 Update

Bryony Shaw has rounded the windward mark in 5th.

7:03 - RS:X Men - Race 7 Finish

Dutch windsurfer Casper Bouman has won race 7 - he's clearly the high wind expert winning both races today but had all his results in the twenties in the light stuff. Nick Dempsey finished 17th.

6:59 - Star - Race 4 Start

There has been a change of wind direction out on the bay - the Star race is postponed.

6:54 - Finn - Medal Race Start

The start is scheduled for 14:05 (local time) - 10 minutes.

6:53 - Team GB Messageboard

I think ALL our readers should post their congratulations to the girls on the Team GB Messageboard.

6:47 - Yngling - Interview

Switch your BBC coverage back to BBC1 - the girls are being interviewed.

6:45 - RS:X Men - Race 7 Update

Nick Dempsey hasn't had the best of starts to this one - 25th at the windward mark.

6:44 - Star - Race 4 Start

Out on Course E, their race is now in the start sequence.

6:42 - Laser Radial - Race 6 Update

Penny Clark has rounded the leeward mark in 9th. She gained 8 places down the run - flying!

6:40 - Laser - Race 6 Finish

Paul Goodison has come back from an indifferent start to finish 7th. The great news is that this puts him in the lead overall again!

6:39 - Yngling - Overall Results

Gold - Great Britain - Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb & Pippa Wilson
Silver - The Netherlands - Mandy Mulder, Annemieke Bes & Merel Witteveen
Bronze - Greece - Sofia Bekatorou, Sofia Papadopoulou & Virginia Kravarioti

6:38 - Yngling - Team GB Celebrations

Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb & Pippa Wilson have gone straight to their coach Paul Brotherton to celebrate. They're all smiles even if the weather is atrocious. Paul is now towing the winning team in to the harbour. Next up on Course A - the Finn medal race.

6:28 - Yngling - Medal Race Finish

It's gold for Great Britain! Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb & Pippa Wilson have crossed the finish in first place in the medal race! That's just fantastic!

6:28 - Yngling - Medal Race Update

There's a big jam at the windward mark - a couple of teams hit and the Dutch round cleanly just over a minute behind the Brits. It's up to 25 knots now!

6:27 - Yngling - Medal Race Update

The Germans have overtaken the Brits, but it just doesn't matter to Sarah, Sarah & Pippa. These two boats have a huge lead over the chasing pack which includes the Dutch. It's the sprint run to the finish left.

6:25 - RS:X - Race 6 Finish

Elsewhere on Fushan Bay, the RS:Xs have held race 6 - Nick Dempsey came 7th in the men, Bryony Shaw came 6th in the women.

6:21 - Yngling - Medal Race Update

The British team of Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb & Pippa Wilson have held the lead around the leeward mark. The Dutch team of Mandy Mulder, Annemieke Bes & Merel Witteveen are in sixth. The German team have closed in on the Brits but they're not concerned - they're just covering the same way the Dutch go. It's a straight match race in their eyes.

6:16 - Yngling - Medal Race Update

The Brits seem to have pulled out a small lead on the pack at the windward mark. The visibility is awful but the wind really is up! We haven't seen conditions like this yet. The great news is (from a British perspective) that the Dutch aren't in the top five.

6:11 - Yngling - Medal Race Update

Good morning! The news for Qingdao is that the Yngling medal race has started 5 minutes ago - there's a lot of wind in Qingdao - they're hiking hard! It's neck and neck between the Dutch and British crews at the moment.
