Finn & Yngling race 1 - Results just in

Shock defeat for Ben, Ynglings take a second

In the first races of the Olympic Games it was a case of snakes and ladders, with Ben Ainslie slipping from the lead in the first Finn race down to finish 10th. In the Yngling class it was a totally different story, with Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson rounding the first mark in 15th place and clawing their way back to finish second on the water behind the Australian trio of Angela Farrell, Karyn Gojnich and Krystal Weir. Their great rivals the Russians, finished a place behind in third.

In the Finns, it was the Dane Jonas Hoegh-Christensen who rounded the first mark ahead, but by the second mark Ben was in a familiar position at the front. With great boatspeed the Brit looked certain of a first race win, but as he covered his closest rivals downwind, Quindao delivered the sort of conditions many were expecting and the race order was flipped on its head.

The race was won by Emilios Papathansiou of Greece, but the good news for Ben is that his main rivals finished behind him. It just served to demonstrate that this year's Olympic regatta is set to be one in which nothing is certain.
