12-13 July 2008
Eleven visitors from sailing clubs around the south of England joined five Exe Sailing Club Cadets to take part in the Exe Cadet Open Meeting over the weekend of 12/13 July.
The wind on Saturday was a gusty Force 3 to 4 from the North West producing flat water and excellent sailing conditions. Three races were held with Race Officer Les Arscott getting the racing under way early in the afternoon. The first race saw three local boats vying for the lead with Alex Horlock and Tim Pearce pulling clear to win ahead of the Kinver sisters Emily and Katie, and Dom Langdon and Shaun Spring.
The shifty conditions produced a number of capsizes in the 2nd and 3rd races but Horlock and Pearce led the second race from start to finish to win by a good margin from visitors Arthur Henderson and Matt Currell, and Amy Yeoman and Alice Alcock. The day was rounded off in splendid style for Horlock and Pearce when, despite a poor start, they recovered to win their third race of the day.
Sunday dawned bright but calm. However, by 10:30 a sea breeze had developed sufficiently for the boats to be launched. The first race was sailed in light winds and a gentle chop, conditions which suited Torquay girls Erin Clark and Lily Wollard who won but didn’t suit overnight leaders Horlock and Pearce who were 8th.
With the wind filling in from the South, the second race was dominated by the girls from Parkstone, Yeoman and Alcock, who led from start to finish, whilst Henderson and Currell did the same in the third race. Horlock and Pearce consolidated their overnight lead with a second and a third to win the event and keep the White Cup in Exmouth for another year. Henderson and Currell were 2nd, Yeoman and Alcock 3rd, and Langdon and Spring 4th.
This was an excellent performance by the Exmouth duo against some stiff opposition and sets them up well for the World Championships in Medemblik, Holland in 2 weeks time. They will be joined in the Great Britain Team at the championships by another Cadet from Exmouth sailed by Tom Kinver and Jamie Proffitt and 5 other boats from around the country.
