North West Junior Travellers at Ullswater Yacht Club

Seventy of the region's most promising young sailors took part in a one-day youth and junior open meeting at Ullswater Yacht Club on Saturday, June 7.

The youngsters, all aged under 19, were racing in two separate meetings, an RYA North West Junior Travellers event, and a NW Topper Travellers event. The light and shifting winds provided challenging conditions for the young sailors who completed three tricky races.

The biggest fleet was for the Topper Open meeting which had an entry of 41 boats from all over the North. Racing was close at the front of the fleet with three different sailors getting three firsts. The overall winner, counting a first and a second, was Adam Millington of Redesmere with Lucy Yeates of Leigh and Lowton coming second, also with three points. Andrew Bridgeman fropm Blithfield was third.

There was an excellent turnout of young UYC sailors with ten taking part in all three races, many of them competing in an open meeting for the first time. Top club sailor was Edmund Clarke who came 12th overall.

The RYA Travellers event was split into three race fleets. In the juniors, with 27 entries, the winner was Sarah Yeates from Leigh and Lowton in a Laser Radial, counting two firsts. Keen UYC single-handed sailors Jamie Neilson and Jenny Tynan teamed up to race a Laser Vago and came second overall on handicap.

In the youth fleet with seven entries, the winner with three firsts was Tom Keenan of Leigh and Lowton in a Laser Radial and the Optimist fleet winner was Haydn Griffiths also of Leigh and Lowton.
