RS Feva Open at Emsworth Sailing Club

Stunning conditions on Sunday © Mike Austen

Stunning conditions prevailed on Sunday at the Emsworth RS Feva Open. Four races were able to be held back to back with one discard due to the great race management of Matt Townsend. Alex Mothersele/Hamish Ellis were the hot favourites but it didn’t go all their own way.

The first race proved to be their slipperiest of the year and promptly became their discard. With a force 4 North by NorthEaster, racing could be held over a tight course up and down the Emsworth Channel with each race consisting of 3 laps.

All the way down the fleet their were tight tussles with tie-breaks having to be settled on countback and for example places 4-6 being separated by one point only. Second overall was the first of 3 all girl combinations in the top 5 with Haylings Eilidh McIntyre/Cassia Roberts coming in just in front of Chichesters hugely improved Alex and Orton who were third.

Hugo Jones-Warner and Vicky Payne continued their good form from the previous day at Chichester coming in fourth beating Alice Kent and Lucy Childs on a tie break. 1 point further back were Will Lowes/Hugo Tucker who overcame a rather sad day at Chi the day before and came in 6th. There were a good many other decent results and performances from sailors who came from as far as Restronguet and Rutland – Oakham School. Of note was the sibling rivalry between the twins.

Many thanks to our sponsors who made the superb prizes possible: Crewsaver (general goodies), Lewmar Marine (blocks) and Harbourside Chandlers in Emsworth (rugby shirts).

It is now a case of continuing early season form with training and some local open meeting before the Sekonda Nationals at HISC 24 – 26 May. On-line entry is available on the HISC website.

Overall Results:

1st Alex Mothersele & Hamish Ellis (Emsworth Sailing Club)
2nd Eilidh McIntyre & Cassia Roberts (HISC)
3rd Alexandra Orton & Steffi Orton (Chichester Yacht Club)
4th Hugo Jones-Warner & Vicky Payne (HISC & ESC)
5th Alice Kent & Lucy Childs (Rutland/Oakham School)
6th Will Lowes & Hugo Tucker (Whitstable YC & ESC)
