A great deal of fun was had by sailors, spectators and organisers alike racing these light radio controlled one-design bottle boats on the beautiful tidal waters of the river Deben.

The chairman of the MYA, Peter Stollery opened the proceedings by presenting a brand new boat to Jim Vice in recognition of his 12 years' service as MYA IOM registrar. Jim was expecting to support his grandchildren sailing in the event and was surprised, but absolutely delighted to be able to sail himself.

The occasionally sunny weather took the edge off the light variable north-easterly wind, which allowed a beat parallel to the beach in front of the Waldringfield clubhouse. The simple sausage course was challenging, because in the lighter winds the bottle boats were only just able to beat against the ebb tide. 12 races were sailed by 23 boats in front of twice that number of enthusiastic family supporters and spectators. The crowd was further enhanced by the Club’s new members’ barbecue at lunchtime.

New owner Jim (84) led the first race round both marks, but was overtaken on the final beat by his son Rob (64) sailing a borrowed boat.

In Race 2, Wayfarer sailor Noel Fraser (37) got the best start, pulled away from the fleet and finished with a big lead from another new bottle boat sailor, Nicola Pearson (75).

Jim led Race 3 all the way round the course to win from Cadet sailor Chris Videlo (51). In the places lower down the fleet youngest competitor, eight-year-old Cameron Vice finished 7th to beat his dad Rob by one place.

Jim was enjoying the conditions and again led Race 4 up the final beat, this time keeping Rob in second place and Chris third. Race 5 leaders were the same sailors but they finished in a different order with Chris winning from Rob and Jim.

The last race before lunch was won by Dragonfly sailor, John Fish (14) with Chris a close second. Scorer Linda Stollery had kept running totals up-to-date showing Jim in the lead just two points ahead of Noel with Rob third.

Many family groups enjoyed a barbecue before getting back to the beach, now getting increasingly muddy as the tide went out. Rob carried on his winning ways taking Race 7 from Chris with Alan Viney (66) third. The wind was giving a hint of a sea breeze counteracting the northerly, reducing the strength and making progress difficult.

Chris reversed the order by winning Race 8 from Rob with Nicola third. Another order reversal in Race 9 gave the win to Rob from Chris and Jim. In Race 10 Tricia Broszek (4), who had never sailed a boat in her life, picked up some tips in the preceding races and found herself in the lead approaching the windward mark. She was so excited that it took several tentative tacks out into the strong tide before she could round the buoy. She was then overtaken by Chris, Alan and Rob at the leeward mark rounding, but was absolutely delighted by her performance.

Race 11 was equally exciting for Dot Fraser (50), racing in her very first championship, as she too found herself leading at the windward mark. She rounded first, but was overtaken at the leeward mark by Rob. She held off the challenge from Nicola to finish second with a huge smile on her face.

The final race saw a different winner as Robert Norris finished with a big lead followed by Rob, who needed to finish at least one place ahead of Chris to win. Chris was unable to finish better than 4th and will have to wait another year for the chance to win the championship.

There could not have been a friendlier bunch sailors of all ages and experience at this superb and beautiful sailing venue.

With no direct control, is this a dark art, or more of a lottery? With a crosswind of about 10MPH, we had 6 Skippers for the first Vane boat event of the year, the small 36 ers. Olly had joined us for the day, to see what all the excitement was about, but for some not quite as straightforward as one would believe. Posted on 25 Mar
