Sailing titles clinched on Prestwick waters

Visitors from all over Scotland and beyond came to Prestwick on 8/ 9 September, for a multi class Traveller, sponsored by South Ayrshire Sports Council and Bosuns Locker chandlery. There were classes for Lasers, Radials, Toppers and Optimists, plus beginners' fleets for Toppers and Optimists. Most of the 70 sailors were juniors or youths, and all enjoyed two days of exciting, breezy sailing in big waves. For most of the classes, this was the final event of the year in the Scottish Traveller Series, so sailors could clinch not only the event, but also the whole series.

And that is just what Moray Clark did in the Topper class, the biggest class with 26 boats. His win in the final race at Prestwick earned him the Topper Scottish Travellers Series, as well as winning this regatta. Lorenzo Chiavarini from Tarbert Loch Fyne took second in both the regatta and the series, with Anna Gorzkowska third in class in the regatta. Jessica Campbell took the beginners fleet.

In the Optimists, Ross Stanley White won the last two races on the Sunday in fresh breezes to take first from Callum Airlie, followed by Tom Kemsley. Rachel Mawer took the beginners fleet.

In Radials, it was girls to the fore. Anna Dobson won all three races on the Saturday and the first on Sunday to win by a distance, from Ailsa Skuodas in second. In Lasers, Cameron Steele managed an equally impressive whitewash, winning four races, with Pete Malcolm second. However Malcolm took the annual Series, with Steele second.

A backdrop of curry, Tennent's lager and Mark Taylor's excellent quiz Those of you following the report from day two will recall I was rather underwhelmed by the forecast for racing on day three. Unsurprisingly actual conditions defied the forecasters and we had wind into the top of the teens. Posted on 29 Aug 2017

Credit where credit's due Credit where credit's due. For once the forecast was spot on, regarding both the wind and (unfortunately) the rain. Well done Windguru. It quickly became apparent that 12-16 knots from the south kicks up something of a sea state at Prestwick. Posted on 26 Aug 2017
