118th Travemuende Woche - Day 8

by Andreas Kling 29 Jul 2007 11:51 BST

Favourites still leading in Travemuende

The favourites of the 118th Travemuende Week will start their last races on Sunday (29 July) as overall leaders. But the final decisions are still open in most of the classes. Kai Mares’ (Kiel, Germany) top position in the Bénéteau 25 class melted and the team is just one point ahead of the crew of Niklas Ganssauge from Hamburg, Germany. The Platu 25 determines the best German team. Helge and Christian Sach (Zarnekau, Germany) battle in the Formula 18 class for their 13th Travemuende Week victory. They are tied with Justus Wolf/Susanne Hahn (Hamburg, Germany).

The sailors left the beach and the harbour of Travemuende on Saturday (28 July) being full of beans: After a stormy day before, a moderate to fresh wind blew over the Bay of Luebeck so the classes had an extensive programme. They all passed three or four races but have already been ashore in the afternoon to enjoy the second last night at the sailing week’s festival areas.

Christoph Nielsen from Berlin, Germany sailed faultless in the Folkeboat class. He scored three fantastic bullets and extended his lead. He is five points ahead of Juergen Breitenbach from Kiel, Germany who was – as well as Ulf Kipcke from Neumuenster, Germany being place third – disqualified on a black flag. Both had to discard this race so they probably can’t jeopardise the overall leader anymore. “We had a great race,” said Nielsen. “It is a good omen for the German Championship next year off Travemuende.”

Meanwhile the Bénéteau 25 use their determination of the best German team as a test for the World’s in August off Neustadt, Germany. It is an exciting duel between Mares and Ganssauge. “We shouldn’t focus only on each other”, said the rivals. “In case we fail both races in a match race duel another one could be the winner.” Reinhard Huebner and Helmar Nauck (Berlin, Germany) have the only chance to beat the top teams. They are 13 points behind while the rest of the fleet is already far behind.

Another match race might happen in the Formula 18 class. The Sach’s are placed first due to more of bullets (four to two) ahead Wolf/Hahn. “Jumping the gun in the sixth race was really annoying,” said helmsman Helge Sach who scored a bullet and placed third two times. “It will be pretty exciting in the end.”

The races of the 118th Travemuende Week will be closed on Sunday (29 July). Twelve classes are going to sail. The first possible start will be at 11.40 h, the last one at 15 h. Moderate wind is predicted which might allow two races on all courses. At 23 h the traditional sailing week will be finished after ten days showing a spectacular firework.
