The first RYA Match-Racing event to be held off the Sea View Yacht Club in Mermaids took place in glorious sunshine and light winds last weekend, resulting in interesting and challenging racing for all those involved. The event attracted some young and talented crews from across the country as well as some international competitors.
Mason Woodworth got off to an excellent start right from the first race and proved hard to beat throughout the event. The light and variable airs made it hard to get all the races completed and the results were eventually decided on the round robin structure with the finals not being run.
Mason Woodworth (USA) won the event scoring 9 points, with Nick Cherry second, 7 points and Mark Kroening (NZL) third, 5 points. The championships qualified as an ISAF grade 3 event.
Mason Woodworth, said after the event “A large fleet of challenging, evenly matched boats combined with an interesting venue and superb hospitality made a great weekend of Match-Racing - we are certainly looking forward to next year!”
Over 13 flights run on Saturday and Sunday the results were:
1st Mason Woodworth 9pts
2nd Nick Cherry 7pts
3rd Mark Kroening 5pts
4th Christian Hamilton 5pts
5th Lizzie Edwards 5pts
6th Mark Campbell-James 4pts
7th Simon Shaw 4pts
8th Raymond Simmonds 3pts
9th Andrew Cornah 2pts
10th Gemma Farrell 1pt
A big thank you to Richard Prest for organising the event with David Campbell-James and his team of umpires, as well as the many helpers on the water and on-the-shore that made the event so much fun.
There was wide agreement that the Seaview Mermaids Charter fleet were an excellent and most suitable boat for this sort of Match-Racing. There will be an open day on July 18th for anyone interested in trying out the Mermaids for a possible charter day. Please contact the Club Secretary, Charles Rogers on 01983613268, to make arrangements.
