“Roaring Meg” Wins First Event In Camper & Nicholsons Yachting IRM Inshore Circuit 2003

The first event in the new Camper & Nicholsons Yachting Ltd sponsored IRM Inshore Circuit, leg one of the IRM Spring Championship run by the Warsash Sailing Club, provided two days of terrific racing for the highly competitive IRM fleet. With windward/leeward courses and a good mix of weather there was something to keep everyone happy at this very well run event.

Racing was dominated by the incredibly consistent “Roaring Meg”, helmed by Rob Greenhalgh and owned by Tim Dixon and Jon Manley, which won four of the six races and took the first leg of the Spring Championship by 10 clear points. This well sailed Jason Ker design hardly put a foot wrong until the final race when a recall at the start followed by a somewhat spectacular broach left them trailing in sixth.

Behind Roaring Meg the battle for second place went right down to the wire with Nick & Anne Haigh’s Farr 40 “Too Steamy” eventually tying on points with Nick Hartshorn’s Kerr 11.3 “El Gringo” and John Sheapard’s Ker 11.3 “Fair Do’s V” having to settle for fourth despite winning the final race. A last minute problem prevented David Murrin and his Farr 40 crew on “2XL” racing on the Saturday but their 3, 2 scoreline on the Sunday gave notice that they will be a boat to watch in the second leg of the Spring Championships on 26 and 27 April.

The next regatta in the Camper & Nicholsons Yachting IRM Inshore Circuit is the Red Funnel Easter Challenge which takes place out of Cowes over the Easter Weekend (18-20 April) with the final part of the Spring Championship following on 26 and 27 April.
