Henri-Lloyd - For the Obsessed

Fairlie Yacht Club Spring Series - Day 1

by Pete Cooper 14 Apr 2003 17:58 BST

A light northerly breeze greeted the race fleet for this the first racing of the season off Kip Marina and sponsored by Yacht Electrical Services. The 6 race series will be sailed over the next 3 Sundays for the Spring Time Trophy awarded to the best overall performance from all 3 classes.

There is also a host of other prizes for the class winners including handheld GPS systems and a hand-held VHF. Race 1 was a quiet affair as the classes headed off for the weather mark the breeze lightened and veered off to the South leaving all 3 classes very close together after the first rounding. Mark Allen's ELAN 333" Eland" made up good ground on the other Elan, Doug Armstrong's Good Craic, and held this lead throughout the rest of the race. New boat to the Fairlie yacht club racing scene Kudos owned by Ian Robinson showed a clean transom to the rest of the class 2 fleet and threw the gauntlet down to warn the rest that he was here to win races but was pipped on corrected time by Tom Barrie's Contessa. All 3 class 3 boats were nip and tuck throughout the race with 2 boats on identical handicaps and only a 1/4 of a minute difference on the other. It was Jim Hoeys Foxterrier 22 Wild Weasel though sporting a nice new North spinnaker that took first place in both races.

Race 2 for class 1 gave a new leader with Graeme Goudie's Moody 336 Cara of Kip moving well in the steadier South Westerly that had settled in whilst race officer for the day John Corson chose a new course. Class 2 again saw Kudos off the line first and this time it was Tom Barrie in his Contessa 32 "Impromptu" who had to settle for second.
