Olympic Gold Medallist to star in RYA Dinghy Training Videos

by Royal Yachting Association 12 Aug 2002 18:34 BST

Olympic Sailing Gold medallist Shirley Robertson will be seen sailing in the South West of England during the summer. Not training for an international competition but sailing with a group of beginner sailors and a camera crew! Devon has been chosen as the location of two new sailing instructional videos to be made by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association). Video one will look at learning to sail a small boat and video two will introduce beginners to sail racing.

The South West is widely recognised as providing some of the best sailing locations in the world, so no wonder the region has succeeded in attracting the RYA who have already established themselves as providers of high quality instructional videos. As a result of the production of these films/instructional videos, it is envisaged that more people from around the country and world will want to take to the water.

A strong creative team has been pulled together to make the films. Rob Andrews, Ex-National Sailing Coach and a leading member of the international sailing community will write and co-produce the videos. Shirley Robertson, Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold Medallist will be the main presenter. APP Broadcast will film, edit and produce the films. APP has earned an international reputation for making sailing coverage exciting and captivating audiences well beyond the traditional sailing enthusiasts. This includes sailing coverage for BBC Sport since 1997 and "Taking on the World", the story of Ellen McArthur's Vendee Globe single-handed race around the world.

The production of the videos has only been made possible as a result of the strong support of the sponsors. South West Watersports - SWH2O, is the main sponsor (www.sw-watersports.com) with four associate sponsors; Henri Lloyd; ICC Salcombe; Laser and Yachts and Yachting.

If you would like further details about the videos, including the official launch dates, please contact, Graham Manchester, On Water Consultants, tel: 01395 260 452, e-mail: ryavideos@onwater.net
