Seaview Mermaids at Skandia Life Cowes Week

by Jon Spencer 14 Aug 2001 12:54 BST

This year the Mermaid Fleet totalled 15 with Noel Dobbs and sons Richard and Alexander in Halluf, defending their Captain's Trophy wins of the last three years.

The Passage Race from Seaview to Cowes was won by Noel with Lucy Morris taking line honours on the Fleet's return.

Alexander took Halluf's helm on the first Saturday and Sunday to establish the family at the front of the Fleet. Monday saw a further win in gusty conditions and Mike Randall, in Zara, dismasted.

Racing was abandoned on Tuesday in even stronger winds, which enabled Zara's return on Wednesday but not to winning form as Richard Dobbs took line honours. John Sandiford Haigh, the Class Captain, decided on a reduced sail plan, which produced competitive close sailing.

The following day John lead the Fleet home before the Dobbs family returned to their winning ways for the remainder of the week.

The Mermaids have provided their helms with excitement and enjoyment throughout Cowes Week, largely due to the dedication and determination of Tom Philpott the Mermaid Bosun. They have now returned to Seaview for further Club and Charter racing until the middle of October.
