The BBSC Youth Icicle has reached its halfway stage with a total of seventy-five boats having participated so far.
Bough Beech served up friendly conditions for day two of the Youth Icicle: a relatively-clean Southerly over the dam on a reservoir that is now full to the brim. RO Martin Burgess and mark-layers Rich Sheridan from Sevenoaks School and Jonny Moss from Tonbridge School were able to set a big trapezoid, and the extra space came in handy as we again had more than fifty boats on the start line.
Charlie from Tonbridge Town SC had another cracking day at the front of the fleet, adding a third and a first to his second and fifth from round one; he leads overall in his ILCA 6. BBSC Snipe sailor Harry, moonlighting in a borrowed ILCA 7, rounds out the top three at the halfway stage after a very tidy second and third in today's races. The filling in the ILCA sandwich, Samuel and Harry are second overall with very consistent performances at the head of an eleven-strong 420 contingent.
Just outside the top three, a trio of very well-sailed Sevenoaks School Fireflys kept the leading ILCAs and 420s honest on day two, and there was close racing between large groups of RS Fevas and Toppers all the way to the back of the fleet.
Five of those Toppers today were part of a very welcome visiting delegation from The King's School Canterbury, mixing with home boats and visitors from Chipstead SC and Wilsonian SC.
The Fevas were all from the two home schools: more than twenty of them in total. Some of the Tonbridge School Fevas were only introduced to using spinnakers this week. Naturally the best way to practice those skills was to go racing in a fleet of fifty.
Day three of Youth Icicle is on Saturday 7th of Feb, with two afternoon races. As ever, huge thanks to the club volunteers, parents, and school staff for making the event happen.
