The 17th Eastern Seaboard Youth Regatta kicked off at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, marking an exciting start to the RVYC regatta season. With 140 boats representing 11 countries, sailors under 19 gathered to compete in one of the region's most dynamic youth sailing events.
Now in its 17th consecutive year, the regatta continues to highlight growth within the sport — particularly among young and female sailors.
The Royal Varuna Yacht Club once again proved an ideal venue for international competition, offering steady winds, open waters, and a welcoming atmosphere for sailors and families alike.
Day 1
Racing began with building winds, 12-17 knot breezes, providing thrilling conditions across all classes. The Optimist fleet, with 81 entries, was the highlight of the day as Thai and Australian sailors traded top spots. Thai sailors dominated both the ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 fleets, showcasing strong local knowledge, while the 420 class produced a tight battle between Thai and Malaysian teams tied on points heading into Day 2.
Day 2
The day began with a gentle 10-knot breeze and an early launch at 10 a.m. After a short delay for steadier wind, racing resumed under light and tactical conditions. The Optimist fleet saw a general recall on the first start, adding to the excitement. Australian sailor Toby Phillips noted that the changing current and swell made the day both challenging and fun. Thai sailors held the top two overall positions, with two Australian skippers breaking into the top five. In the 420 class, Thai teams led by three points ahead of Malaysia, while in the ILCA 6 fleet, Ton Rattana (THA) extended his lead over strong Chinese rivals.
Day 3
After a light morning rain, racing started at noon in 7-9 knots. The lighter breeze created a more strategic day on the water. Thai sailors continued to control the ILCA 4 and 6 fleets, while Malaysia and Thailand traded wins in the 420 class. Only two races were completed due to the softening wind, setting up a decisive final day of racing.
Day 4 - Final Day
The final day delivered perfect sailing conditions — steady 11-knot winds and smooth seas. The on-water team set up efficiently, allowing three races to be completed before the prize-giving ceremony. Competition was fierce across all fleets as sailors pushed hard for the final standings.
