Switch UK Championship at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy - Day 2

by Mark Jardine 27 Sep 2025 19:00 BST 26-28 September 2025

Day two of the Switch UK Championship saw another four races held in a 12-14 knot Southerly, with the wind funnelling over Portland into the harbour.

The unique scoring format of the event means that for the sailors the best ranking from the first two days is added to the ranking on the final day to determine a sailor's overall result.

In a week that has seen considerable disquiet from the world's top Olympic sailors about scoring systems that could be used at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, it's interesting to see this fast-growing foiling class also try something new.

While Friday belonged to Fin Dickinson, topping the ranking, Saturday was dominated by Sam Whaley, who knocked in a trio of wins which enabled him to sit out the final race, having already secured the top ranking for the day.

Elysia O'Leary turned the tables on Hattie Rogers, so the women's title will be hotly contested on Sunday.

The fast-charging Matt Beck though could be a threat to both of them, having finished third on both days, and already showing he is capable of beating both of them.

Rosgo Banham and Kyle Stoneham both have considerable foiling heritage, so cannot be counted out.

Elsewhere there was a clash of the James's, with James Percival-Cooke and James Crossley crashing, resulting in Crossley being awarded average points for the day. As it is, he'll carry his fifth ranking from Friday into tomorrow, and will be back out on the water on Sunday.

Sunday's forecast was looking uncertain, but the models are now firming up, and a 9-13 knot North-North-Westerly is expected for the four scheduled races. It's all to play for!
